Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
Revelation 1:7 ESV
The word rendered “wail†means properly to beat, to cut; then to beat or cut oneself in the breast as an expression of sorrow; and then to lament, to cry aloud in intense grief.
— Barnes Commentary
I started my study on Revelation tonight and got caught up around verse 8 of Chapter 1. Everyone on earth will wail because of Him. Believer or not, EVERY person will see Him, even those who pierced Him. People will wail when they realize they were wrong in denying His deity, Lordship, and existence and they will realize the wrath to come. That is so… wow. I don’t even have a word for it.
Then, I read the description of the Christ in verses 13 – 16 and was in awe at verse 16 where John says that the His face was like the sun shining in its full strength.
And in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white like wool, as white as snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
Revelation 1:13-16 ESV
No clouds, nothing to block it, just pure and brilliant light. Imagine what it must be like to see the sun itself in its full strength up close. Even now, when the sun shines brightly, we wear shades to block it from hurting our eyes. Imagine having the sun in front of your face full throttle. Amazing, especially in light of the following Scriptures:
And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
Revelation 21:23 ESV
They will see his face… And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
Revelation 22:4-5 ESV
This is exciting and terrifying at the same time. I’m terrified for those that don’t believe and I am terrified because of my own sinfulness because one day we will ALL stand in front of a Holy God. I am thankful that He loved me enough to die for my sins.
Soli DEO Gloria forreal.
